It’s no secret that thousands of people can’t find a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the long-term unemployment rate (people unemployed 27 weeks or more) is 4.4%. This is almost twice as much as the previous record of 2.6% that was logged in 1983 and half the current national unemployment rate of 9.6%. The bureau estimates that 1 person out of every 25 have been out of work for 6 months or more.

Despite what the politicians or prominent personalities in the media may say, people want to work. They are out there scouring job board sites, networking on LinkedIn and other social media outlets, polishing their resumes, and pounding the pavement. The problem is they cannot find a job because the jobs just aren’t there.

Now I’m not suggesting that you give up trying to find a job simply because the pickings are slim right now. However, I do think that if it’s been over six months and you still can’t find employment, you should start considering other options. Namely, if no one seems willing to hire you, then you should employ yourself.

The benefits of self-employment are numerous and well-known. When you work for yourself, you have a more flexible lifestyle especially with a home based business. If you need to tend to a sick child or visit the dentist, you can do that without having to ask permission from your boss. If you set your business up the right way, you will still earn money even when you are not actively working on your business.

Another major benefit to being self-employed is the fact that your income potential is unlimited. Instead of having to beg the boss for a raise, you can make adjustments in your business at any time so that you earn more money. Even if you are one of the lucky ones and are still gainfully employed, starting a side business is a good way to protect your finances if your company suddenly decides to do some downsizing.

So what is the best work at home job you can hire yourself for? I may be partial but I would have to say affiliate marketing. An affiliate marketer is basically a commissioned sales person who earns money selling other people’s products over the internet. However, unlike traditional commissioned sales, you can set up a system where you generate cash without ever having to talk to a single person.

Okay, that is extreme and there will be times when you may have to talk to a prospect to answer questions. The point is, with affiliate marketing, you can create an automated system that finds and converts customers while allowing you the maximum amount of personal freedom.

The biggest challenge to becoming self-employed is getting started. Here are some tips:

* Learning about affiliate marketing from leaders in the industry

* Trying out the business to see if it is something you want to do

* Acquiring new skills within a few weeks that can help you make more money

* Selling much-needed health and wellness products from a multi-million dollar debt free company

* Securing your financial future by building an additional stream of income

The fact that you can’t find a job may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Take a leap of faith and invest in yourself. You may be surprised to find you can fly.

There are three guidelines for the best businesses to start in a bad economy: Flexibility, Need and Expertise. Let me tell you a story or two to demonstrate.

The Story About Flexibility. I have a favorite mail order house. I’ve used them for years, always with great, great results. About five years ago this mail order house expanded into retail stores throughout the country with over 300 locations. For a year or two business was great. Then came The Great Fall. And they tumbled. They are now in bankruptcy. As one company executive put it, “We lost our flexibility. With mail order, we could scale our operations. We didn’t have that flexibility with retail leases.”

Does that mean that retail is necessarily a bad idea? Not at all. Listen to this tale:

The Story About Need. In a fancy mall in southern California I watched a new store build out and open. I just knew that Amy and her crew were doomed. It was a baby store, and they were only a few doors away from another baby store that wasn’t doing so hot. But lo and behold, Amy’s new baby store really thrived! There were always people in the new store. Amy’s secret: She tapped into parent’s and grandparent’s needs for organic things for a baby. Everything in the new store was organic.

And the best businesses to start in a bad economy definitely follow the Golden Rule of Business: Entrepreneur, Know They Stuff!

The Story About Expertise. The internet is still a mystery to most independent entrepreneurs, but trust me, if you Know Your Stuff, odds are excellent that you can have a thriving business. Jeff is an accountant who got laid off a couple of years ago. He took his knowledge online, and before long had clients literally all over the country. Modern technology being what it is, this is not difficult any more. Every day thousands of entrepreneurs duplicate Jeff’s story.

These guidelines are not limiting. Rather, use them to expand your options. Reach. Grow. Become more than you ever thought possible.

Here are a few of the best businesses to start in a bad economy:

1. Nearly anything internet based is an excellent option. There is flexibility, low overhead, and very strong potential income. Some people offer services on the internet, and some offer products, and some provide a mix. And contrary to popular opinion, you don’t even need to know HTML coding to have a really nice and successful website!

2. Tutoring. Really capitalize on something you know well, whether it is being a lumberjack or speaking Mandarin in business. There are many thousands of options here, and with the world at your fingertips on the web, anything is possible.

3. Day care for the elderly. This is a hugely growing area, with more and more elderly stepping into the arena daily. This is not necessarily for the really, really old and destitute, but also for the elderly who just need some assistance, perhaps even as a home worker. I know several people who do very well taking care of paperwork for the elderly, e.g., bank deposits, balancing the checkbook, paying bills, etc. Or open a day care center for the elderly. Start with one center and odds are that it will expand rapidly.

4. Going Green. Organic clothing, green food, organic pet supplies – it is all becoming very, very popular. Be sure your products are certified organic and thousands of outlets open up for you automatically.

5. Home made things. After every financial crisis, people seem to gravitate to homemade things, whether it is quilts or soups or tie dye shirts. If you have the skill, this could be your direction, whether it is one shirt at a time or thousands.

The secret to the best businesses to start in a bad economy is to draw upon your own strengths, your own knowledge. Then make it grow into the kind of business that you want it to be.

The Australian Football League (AFL) is the most attended sporting confederation in the country. It is also one of the most watched games in Australia to date. The AFL has brought hundreds of Aussies together to watch, celebrate, and support their favoured teams. Supporting your favourite club is not only done through crowd participation but also through apparel and merchandise. That is where AFL stores come into the picture.

The patrons of AFL clubs have many possible and easy ways to have authentic and original AFL merchandise and memorabilia. One of the fastest ways of purchasing original merchandise is through online AFL shops. Online shops can give you a wide variety of products supporting your favourite clubs. From the Adelaide Crows to the Western Bulldogs, online shops can give you unique, yet useful items to commemorate your favourite clubs.

With the 115th season currently taking place, people are probably looking for popular items to purchase. AFL online stores provide easy browsing experience for people interested in AFL goods. They can look for products such as supporter apparel, inflatable hands, kids wear, game day accessories and items, football gear, and bar accessories. If you want to move your support to a higher level, then you can also browse through a shop’s automotive accessories, baby and infant items, and home ware goods.

With a simple click of a button, you can also find the perfect gift for a friend who is a hardcore fan of football. People can find cool items in online shops no matter where they are in the country. If you are a true blue Aussie football fanatic who cannot get to any physical AFL store, then online shops would be the perfect option for you. Online shops are very convenient whether you are just looking for a simple scarf or cap dedicated to your club.

Some people may have difficulty purchasing online because they are not comfortable with the security web-based stores offer. One simple way to check whether a website can be trusted with your credit card details is to find a little padlock icon at the lower right side of your web browser. That little padlock icon signifies that it is a secure website, giving you confidence in making online purchases for your football items.

You can pay using different methods with an online store. Most of the time, they can accept major credit cards. Direct bank deposits, EFT POS cards, and online cheques are also accepted by a majority of online shops. Items and products bought through online shops are delivered straight to the home of the buyer. It may take a day or two before you get the product after the transaction has been made.

AFL shoppers should look for an online store that can provide a comprehensive range of quality aerial ping-pong products such as clothes, specialty items, and gifts. For collectors, AFL memorabilia and official AFL photos can also be found in online stores. You can buy items anytime you want at your convenience. Thanks to the internet, you can support your favourite club during and off season.

Owning a business is an uphill battle. The learning curve is steep and the competition is firmly entrenched. Only the strong stand a chance to survive to see their first stress-free, week-long vacation.

When a potential client phones in they have their client recommendations, the sales pitch that they’ve been around for 30 years (entirely mutually exclusive from competent), but it contains more expertise than you.

Personally, at the age of 25, these companies had the intimidation factor over me. It’s almost like in the Nintendo game Mike Tyson’s Punch Out where you are a 1/5 of the size of Mike Tyson…though, it’s real and it’s not just for money, it’s for pride and a career.

However, you are not alone. The information that you need to succeed comes from the American forefathers of business. My high school history teacher once wrote in big letters on the chalkboard, “Times change, people never do.”

In this instance, John D. Rockefeller has the wisdom and credentials to give you, the aspiring business owner, a place to begin – a positive mentality and view on life to gain.

“I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature.”
John D. Rockefeller

- Tenacity, not intelligence, is the biggest roadblock to success. In 2006, Time Magazine did a survey on where the Fortune 50 CEOs of this country went to college. It was like a Sweet 16 game, only this time Harvard got upset by the Texas college system.

Tenacity is what makes our country great today. When Americans came from Europe to the States hundreds of years ago, they did it in preparation to hustle. It wasn’t the bluebloods who were rushing to take a miserable, sometimes deadly weekend trip over the Atlantic.

We were the Tired, Poor Huddled Masses that had the guts to realize that we were Tired and Poor. I would tell the young, aspiring entrepreneur that the ability to fight is in his or her blood, they simply just don’t know it. At the time, I didn’t.

“I know of nothing more despicable and pathetic than a man who devotes all the hours of the waking day to the making of money for money’s sake.”
John D. Rockefeller

As a young business owner, don’t chase money. Doing so can lead to unhappiness, failure or even worse, a loss of ethical conduct as you will be prone to breaking your integrity. If you let it, money can snap your integrity in two.

Instead, do what you are happy doing. There’s a good exercise that says if you were locked in a box forever and ever, and you were allowed to do one thing, what would it be? Yes. It is a morbid thought, albeit helpful.

You could be the best garbage man in the world and you’ll make enough money to leave your car collection to one of your 7 children. At the end of the day, the one driver to compete and go through what I’ve seen first hand is passion.

If you want to succeed, consider yourself married to your business. Though, if you love your wife, it’s not so bad, huh?

I have had many younger, aspiring entrepreneurs say, “Well, this industry is hot, I’m thinking about breaking into…”

The truth is that it’s not the hot or cold streak that an industry is going, it’s where you fit. I started and carried a staffing agency through what we’ll remember as our great depression. So, I worked out of an apartment. It was fun. I had less expenses and less responsibility.

I just think that John D. would agree with me when I recommend not to get into paper products…unless you’re oddly passionate about paper checks.

So you want to make a Droid app and think you have some pretty good ideas for what you want to make. You just might. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm. I do want to see if I can help you channel that into a successful way of thinking about your project.

First of all, it is not going to get done in a day or so. If you do, the app will stink – I guarantee it. There is a process, both in your thoughts and in your actions that should result in you having an app to present to the App Store. Second, you are more likely to “kill it” by making a lot of apps and having some pretty good ones than to put all your effort into one or three and wait then to see what kind of money they make for you. You will make better money over the long run if you have a lot of little streams of income than if you try three or four, get bummed out and quit. The thing is, the more apps you write, the better apps you will write because you will have the experience gained from all you wrote before.

While you are thinking about that, if you are deadly serious about writing apps, you should get an Android phone. When you have that, you can try out some apps to see what they do and get some idea of the ways they were programmed to interact with the user. These will be details you will find valuable when you face all the choices you will be making in this pursuit.

You will then need to get the Android SDK – the basic app writing program.

Now you get to the beef of the matter: what will your app do for the subscriber? Ideally, you are the market. If you are a typical member of the market you are seeking to reach, then you can plan the processes you want in the app to solve the problem you have. Before you begin roughing in an app, though, you should see if there already is one out there that does what you want done. Going head to head with a good, popular app is not ideal.

If you do find there are apps written to solve your problem, you should see if they have a good user interface and are pleasant to use. There are apps out there that have little competition but are still going un-downloaded and/or unsold. If they have functions that seem clunky or are difficult to use, or they do more than is necessary, becoming too complex for normal use, then you may have a legitimate improvement for the offering.

I suggest that you find others with your need to brainstorm with and discuss how you are going to solve this problem. To make it work, you can set up the “app” on letter sized paper, like an oversized scale model. You should write on it with a marker, crayon, or other clear and somewhat broad-tipped marking device. The android screen is small, so you will be limited in the amount of information you can put there. Having a gross tip will help you make sure you don’t put more than practical information on each page.

Make each page a “screen shot” of what your app will do. For this choice, the page then will look like this. For that choice (have your tester poke the page there) the page then will come up looking like “this.” This way you will suss out lack of functionality issues, unclear instructions within the program, or non-intuitive interface issues.

Bear in mind, the touch screen on a Droid not only responds to touch, it responds to movement as well as speed of movement also. Think of issues like view, zoom, and pan. Remember the finger is a blunt instrument as well and make sure the buttons are not too fine to hit easily with a finger.

This and many other topics are discussed on my blog, “Apple and Android App Questions and Answers,” which is designed to enable you to learn how to make a droid app from active developers. I look forward to seeing you add to the discussion by posting any relevant question or answer to an existing question.

Best ways to make money is like anything else that is “the best”. It all depends on… (you fill in the blank) What may work for one person may not work for another person. There is no cookie cutter best for everyone.

Unfortunately due to today’s economy most people are looking for ways to make money, preferably from home. With the advent of pink slips, lay-offs, and companies closings the real risk is to not have a plan ‘B. Sadly the adage of “having all your eggs in one basket” is all so real.

That being said, there are a few helpful tips you may want to apply once you’ve found the way you would like to make money . Normally the easiest is so obvious that we usually over-look it. It’s that thing or business that we’ve looked at or attended the seminar but thought, Nah…. not for me… it’s too risky.

Getting back to your passion; Let’s say you started your business doing something that you are passionate about. Now to take your business to another level and incorporate effortless income, there are a few business strategies you will need to implement.

Read below as we outline 3 simple tips that will give you the upper hand.

1. Learn to outsource services and functions or task that you don’t enjoy or don’t have the expertise of doing. This makes your business more enjoyable

2. Don’t do the things that you don’t like, or have the know-how to do. This slows you down, and will eliminate the learning curve.

3. Always look for better, faster and more efficient ways to perform each component of your business. You will be surprised to know how much time and money you can save just from tweaking routine tasks.

In short, one of the best ways to make money is without a doubt doing what you love. That being said, it doesn’t mean that building your business will be a stroll in the park. Keep in mind, it doesn’t matter what type of business you start… Work is required! And the only place that success come before work is in the dictionary.

But let the truth be told; Realistically, not everyone has a passion that’s suitable to turn into a true business. Thankfully, quite a few of the best ways to make money are not widely publicized. Remember, this is the day of modern technology and some of the best ways to make money can easily be found via online searches. However, you do have to be careful in your decision-making process.

So first things first: cash flow and time. With these two currencies, all other things are possible. Without them, nothing is possible. – Tim Ferris

Free cash flow (FCF) is the cash that is available for a business to distribute to investors or reinvest into the business. The availability of this cash is the result of the business receiving profit from products and services. After taking in profits, the business still have to pay its taxes and the cost of doing business (operating cost). This left-over cash is called the FCF for the business. As an entrepreneur, it is important that you focus on achieving free cash flow so that you can grow your business. There is not one entrepreneur that wants to run out of cash.

To calculate free cash flow you must subtract the cost of doing business from your profits. As a simple example:

Company A buys a widget for $25, sells the widget for $100, and barring any operating expenses and taxes the company has a free cash flow of $75. If there are capital expenditures (cash required for current operations), then you subtract that amount from the profits. So if the cost of doing business was $20, the FCF is reduced to $55.

FCF is one of the most standard measurements to check the financial circumstances of a company. A positive FCF shows that a company is able to save money even after all expenses. Even a negative FCF can indicate that a company is making large investments, which can have potential for high returns in the long-term. Also, FCF allows a business to increase value by introducing new products, paying stakeholders, and repaying debts. FCF is relatively easy to understand business concept and is a great indicator for the health of a business.

For Investors, free cash flow represents that amount of capital your business can distribute among stakeholders. Investors don’t get paid with earnings — they get paid with cash. Profits do not equal cash flow.

The way a business is organized has a fundamental effect on its financial structure; thereby, affecting its free cash flow. A company’s finances and its operations are absolutely connected. In order to maximize on free cash flow, your business must either increase profits or decrease cost. Having the proper business system in place is a crucial element necessary to achieve a value chain that both produces high profits and low operating cost.

As an entrepreneur, you must begin with the end in mind. Now in the Information Age, you can set you goal on creating an automated vehicle for generating cash without consuming time. The Information Age allows information to get powered by technology and low-cost resources like silicon to produce wealth. This means that the ability to create free cash flow for the entrepreneur has greatly increased. FCF is available to any business that is willing to (1) build a system, (2) buy a system or (3) attach to a system. The goal is to own a system and have people work that system for you.

The business system that you choose is the guide for your safe passage from the left side of the CASHFLOW Quadrant to the right side. This journey will progress as you acquire a system to make your business operations smooth while creating high profits and low operating costs. It is your bridge to financial freedom and a way to “Create Your Own Lane” in business success.

These days building a values-driven business is a no brainer, just ask salesforce.com’s Foundation’s creator Marc Benioff and he’ll tell you all about it. You see philanthropy starts with an idea, and he developed a great strategy around giving. He needed to decide what issue or issues the company will be addressing and why, and what form the philanthropy would take. He thought about how the philanthropy would be accomplished, and what would be the long-term goal. He also wondered how will it all fit into the company’s core values. His vision became clear: to use salesforce.com’s people, technology and relationships to improve communities, inspire youth to be more successful, support the world during times of extreme need, and promote compassionate capitalism.

On March 16th of this year the foundation pledged a $50,000 matching grant for donations made to the Red Cross through Causes.com. The following day saw the Salesforce.com Foundation partnered with the Miner Foundation to increase their match to $100,000.

Some companies have their goals written into a clear mission statement that serves as the business’s moral compass and salesforce.com’s approach is truly innovative. CEO and Co-Founder Marc Benioff integrated the salesforce.com corporate social responsibility strategy in 1999. The salesforce.com Foundation – is focused on leveraging people, products and services to strengthen communities, based on Benioff’s 1/1/1 model.

The company gives their employees six paid days to perform community service, donating 1% of their time to the community, and the company donates 1% of its product and 1% of its equity to the foundation. According to the latest figures posted on their website, they have contributed over 241,880 in volunteer hours, have served over 10,230 organizations and have donated more than $21 million to charitable causes. Salesforce.com supports organizations that are working to make the world a better place.

What is interesting is that all successful philanthropic endeavors have something in common: they are built steadily over time. The greatest impact for the organizations that are involved see the development of positive, lasting relationships between both the companies and their communities. A win-win situation.

What are the benefits and associated with this type of philanthropy? Successful projects reflect well on the business, which could influence consumers and clients who are constantly making choices in the marketplace. Essentially, the marketplace is a tool to create wealth and resources that can be distributed back through the community to solve daily challenges that exist.

So far it seems to have paid off in handsome dividends for everyone!

With the advent of 128 bit encryption and beyond, online shopping has become a mainstay of not only North American commerce, but commerce worldwide. More and more people feel comfortable and secure in making purchases from internet stores. Many new entrepreneurs start an online store because they have homemade products to offer. One example is handmade crafts or woodworking products. If you’ve been thinking about starting an online business, and considering an online store as an option, then this article may help you make your final decision.

Some Of The Most Popular Types Of Online Stores

* Music Store
* Dollar Store
* Book Store
* Crafts Store
* Adult Products Store
* Video/Movie Store
* Specialty Store

Once you’ve made the decision to start an online store, whether handmade products, affiliate products, or wholesale, you have a number of options available to you to get that online store up and running and earning money quickly. Of course, which options are best suited for you will depend on how comfortable you are with the technical aspects of running a website and web design. Many companies, like Yahoo, offer store websites that are very user-friendly and simple to set up.

Define Your Needs For An E-commerce Hosting Solution

E-commerce, which stands for electronic commerce and is commonly referred to as web commerce, basically means selling merchandise or services over the net by means of electronic transactions through a secure server or network.

To build an e-commerce enabled online store requires the following:

* a host that offers a secure server
* a secure and reliable payment processor
* a secure download delivery system if you’re selling digital merchandise
* a quick, reliable and cost-effective shipping system if you offer physical products
* software that can manage customers as well as their needs

Research Your Options

Once you’ve defined your needs, you can then begin researching your options. There are two basic paths you can take when building an e-commerce store – either build a custom system with components and parts according to your requirements and budgets or take advantage of an already well-established online store provider such as Yahoo Stores.

Remember that the quality of your hosting will reflect the quality of your business. The last thing you need is your entire website going down due to cheap hosting or poor maintenance and management. The best choice is to find a reputable host that will provide you with a storefront and hosting for a reasonable price. Don’t try to pinch pennies on this aspect of your business. You could end up out of business in no time.

If you would like to learn more about Yahoo Stores and what they offer, I’d recommend reading Starting An Online Yahoo Store Business.

Think about the times you have said something like, “Why hasn’t someone invented a product that would do ______?”

That question can be the beginning of a unique product. You have probably had those thoughts and let them go without capturing them.

Write down your ideas for products the next time you notice them surfacing in your thoughts. Capture an idea without judging it and regardless of how incomplete it is in your mind. It can be developed later if you decide you want to take it to the next level.

Day-to-day chores or problems bring opportunities for new products. Many new products, such as the Weed Eater, were created to make a chore much easier or to save time doing an unpleasant but necessary task. We all have too little time in the busy world we live in. Some of the most successful products save us time. If your product idea makes life easier, it may have potential. I say too often, “They can put a man on the moon but can’t make a coffee pot that doesn’t spill when you pour from it.” Some of the best products come from very simple ideas.

Go to the US Patent and Trademark Office web site if you think you have no product ideas of your own. This web site can provide ideas regarding the competition you may encounter.

In addition, the US Patent and Trademark Office web site has thousands of patents and many can be leased from the patent owner for a percentage or royalty. Look at expired patents, too. Patents generally only last 17 to 20 years. Anyone can produce a product that has an expired patent. Sometimes an old idea is much more valuable when made from today’s materials. You may be able to file a new patent on an old idea by improving it in some way.

Leverage your first idea into additional products as you develop your business. A unique design in one form can be expanded and manufactured in other forms. This will allow you to create an entire product line from a single idea or group of ideas.

It is important for your idea to serve a niche in the market. The smaller the niche the better, because a small niche allows you to concentrate on that market and that market only. Later, you may migrate into new niches as a way to expand your business.

My idea began one day on my job in 1995. I was employed at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station near the Kennedy Space Center in Central Florida. During a discussion with some co-workers the subject centered on our mutual dislike for wearing mandatory company identification badges. Just by chance a man from another company came by and gave us a lapel pin that his company was handing out for a promotion. After everyone left, I happened to attach my ID badge to the lapel pin by attaching the little alligator clip to the bottom of the pin. That’s when the idea hit me. I thought if I just put a little cutout at the bottom of a lapel pin, it could accommodate the alligator clip attached to any and all ID badges.

I set out to design a lapel pin with a cut-out space and a bar at the bottom. I wanted to make it possible to create custom designs from logos of corporations or to make stock pins with logos from several industries to keep on hand so they could be sold individually. It took me weeks to prefect the design.

I drew designs on pieces of paper for many days. At night, I would wake up with another idea as to how it would look. I got to the point that I kept a pen and paper on my nightstand to write down ideas that came to me in the middle of the night. This is something I still do today, however, I have modernized a bit and now use a digital recorder.

Good ideas keep you awake at night. I would go so far as to state that if you do not stay awake night after night, you might not be passionate enough to pursue your idea.

Most ideas come to people on their day job. Many come while addressing problems that cannot be solved. Other ideas come to people while spending time working on a hobby. Your idea does not have to involve rocket science. You do not have to invent a new super computer. A simple idea is often best. An idea that inspires others to say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” can make millions of dollars.
